L-Lysine

L-lysine, an essential amino acid, cannot be synthesized in the body. Vegetarians can be deficient in lysine because, while meat, poultry, and milk are rich sources of lysine, proteins in grains and cereals are typically low in lysine.

Of the many biological functions requiring lysine, some notable applications include synthesis of connective tissues such as bone, skin, collagen, and elastin; synthesis of carnitine and the resultant conversion of fatty acids to energy; support for healthy growth and development in children; and maintenance of a healthy immune function.

Herpes Simplex Virus:

The herpes simplex viruses are responsible for anything from cold sores to shingles.  L-lysine works to stop the growth-promoting effects of another amino acid, L-arginine.  This slows down the replication process of viral infections.

L-lysine competes with L-arginine for absorption by infected cells and can help inhibit the impact.  One double blind, placebo control study showed that L-lysine supplementation significantly reduced the frequency, duration and severity of the symptoms and improved healing time of 27 individuals with genital and oral Herpes simplex infections compared to the control group (1).

Chicken Pox and Shingles:

Both Chicken pox and Shingles are caused by the Varicella-zoster virus which is in the Herpes virus family.   Because this virus is in the Herpes family, it is thought to have the same dependency upon L-arginine for growth.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that L-lysine may help reduce shingles outbreaks and causes pre-existing outbreaks to heal faster.  Lysine is a master repair agent in the body and taking it immediately upon outbreak, leads to faster healing of blisters and rashes.

Lysine Rich Diet:

If one has a viral infection, it is advisable to go on a low-arginine, high lysine diet in order to reduce flare-ups and symptoms.

L-lysine is found in dairy, most proteins and many vegetables.  Higher amounts of L-arginine are found in chocolate, tomatoes and nuts among other things. Use the chart below to ensure that the diet is higher in lysine foods, until the outbreak passes.
