Cellular inflammation is a common day epidemic that is that is the fundamental cause of degenerative disease in our society. Turmeric has been shown to reduce inflammation & oxidative stress as well as any herbal medicinal ever studied.
Turmeric root is extraordinarily rich in curcuminoid polyphenol anti-oxidants that give it a classic yellow-orange color. The principal crucuminoid is curcumin which is responsible for much of the health benefits attributed to turmeric.
Blood sugar imbalances and insulin resistant cell membranes are critical factors that promote inflammatory conditions in the body. Curcumin has been shown to stabilize blood sugar and reverse cellular insulin resistance by increasing the number of insulin receptors and improving the receptor binding capacity to insulin (1).
Turmeric’s Remarkable Anti-Inflammatory Properties:
Turmeric is the 4th highest anti-oxidant rich herb with an extraordinarily impressive ORAC score of 159,277. These anti-oxidants such as curcumin are very powerful modulators of oxidative stress.
Turmeric also boosts levels of natural cellular anti-oxidants such as glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. These molecules are critical for the body to limit oxidative stress all day long (2). The greater the surplus of cellular anti-oxidants the less stress and damage occurs to vital organ systems.
Turmeric’s powerful curcuminoids have been shown to reduce the inflammatory mediating prostaglandins, cytokines and other molecules such as interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and Nuclear Factor kappa Beta NFkB (3). This tips the scales and pulls the body out of an inflammatory cascade and promotes anti-inflammatory behavior at the cellular level.
Turmeric Reverses Disease Formation:
Turmeric’s ability to inhibit oxidative stress & inflammatory prostaglandins across multiple organ systems and multiple biochemical pathways makes it an incredibly powerful anti-aging and performance enhancing aid.
Turmeric has been shown to reverse diabetes, & improve blood vessel elasticity (4) This stabilizes blood pressure and improves cardiovascular function. Additionally, by inhibiting pro-inflammatory prostaglandins it is a powerful pain inhibitor and cancer cell inhibitor.
Turmeric improves blood flow and reduces brain inflammation thus making you cognitively sharper while protecting against Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and every other neurodegenerative disorder (5). It has been shown to speed up wound healing from cuts & burns while reducing inflammatory skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema (6)
Curcumin and Cancer:
Research done at the Life Extension Foundation found that curcuminoids target ten factors involved in cancer development (7). This includes chronic inflammation, DNA damage and disruption of cell signaling pathways. Curcumin supplementation was shown to target destruction of cancer cell mitochondria, disrupt the cancer cell cycle and arrest stem cell development that facilitates further cancer cell formation.
There are hundreds of other studies that have shown that curcumin turns on natural apoptotic (cell suicide) switches in cancer cells (8). They also reduce inflammatory prostaglandins that promote cancer cell growth. A study out of China showed that curcumin was able to induce apoptosis within triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells (9). TNBC is a type of cancer that defies conventional chemotherapy and radiation.
The Benefits of Liposomal Curcumin:
As a clinician, I highly recommend my clients use turmeric in their daily diet. However, the curcuminoids are poorly absorbed into the bloodstream (10). Turmeric root only contains about 1.8% dry weight curcumin and the native chemical form of curcumin is only about 1.5% absorbed. Making your own turmeric pasts etc is good but unfortunately it is NOT going to be biologically beneficial.
There is one big factor that maximize the amount of curcuminoids absorbed and utilized by the body. It is within the delivery system. The ideal delivery system will bypass the digestive tract and get directly into the cells of the body.
The Best Delivery System: Liposomal Phospholipids
The curcuminoids are significantly more bioavailable when they are mixed in with a phospholipid form. The phospholipid is the same substance as our bodies cell membranes.
Within the phospholipid, the curcumin will penetrate into the cell and be fully bioactive. No other form exists that has this level of benefit. This is called a liposomal curcumin and research has shown that it can enhance the absorption of the curcumin by up to 20 times (11).
Phospholipids and in particular, phosphatidylcholine is an essential nutrient for brain function. It makes up a large part of brain cells and is incorporated into all of your neuron cell membranes. The absorption of the curcuminoids is significantly enhanced when it is in this liposomal form and it crosses the blood brain barrier to have a powerful impact on overall brain and neurological support.
What is Different About This Than Other Liposomal Forms?
- Doesn’t Cross Blood Brain Barrier: Other companies use an oil based product, not actually a miscelle, which does help with absorption, however doesn't allow BBB passage into the brain.
- Soy Formulations: Some companies produce phospholipids but do it through the use of soy lecithin. Many people are highly sensitive to soy and must avoid it. Soy also has phytoestrogenic qualities and can impact hormones in a negative manner. Look for sunflower lecithin or sunflower based phospholipids as in the Meriva 500 SF.
- Black Pepper: Most companies sell enhanced curcumin by adding a black pepper extract called piperine. This compound by itself can cause liver toxicity, but its real disadvantage lies in the mechanism of action of the piperine on the endothelial lining of the human gut.
Piperine causes a "leaky gut syndrome" analogous to what happens with Celiac patients who are exposed to gluten for example. It will enhance the curcumin absorption, but it also increases, by pathological damage the absorption of toxins into one’s blood stream.
Why I Love Meriva 500-SF:
This supplement has the highest absorption and impact at downregulating inflammation in the brain and body. It is my go to supplement for anti-inflammatory support!
Maintenance: For health maintenance, I recommend 2 caps – 1x daily with food
Advanced Anti-Inflammatory Support: For individuals in chronic pain and neurodegenerative conditions and other inflammatory states, I will often recommend taking 4 caps – 2x daily which brings them over the 3.6 g/daily amount that has shown the greatest clinical impact.
The individuals will typically only need this dosage for 3 days – 2 weeks to see significant results depending upon the state of their pre-existing condition.
